Why The Willow Weeps

The Willow watches the lovers make promises they can’t keep.

And the Willow weeps.

The Ponderosa wakes to the songs the birds preach.

Old songs of two souls entangled fill their seeds.

Planted deep in the earth

lies the dreams we dare not speak.

The sun sighs before she shines,

And the moonlight lingers at the dive bar past closing time.

The stars cry, shooting across the sky, wishing lovers had more time.

Music transcends space and time

and moves the hollow heart beat.

When nothing else can be heard,

the song bird melts the pride the mind binds to our bones.

The guitar takes it all too far,

and the rebirth begins before the lesson.

A curious little dragonfly wonders why the Willow weeps,

and seeks answers to the deep,

           only to find: flight has its price,

ignorance is light,

the skies are heavy;

and the night illuminates the fight

inside of the hungry wolf;

behind the eyes of the greedy man;

within the lies we tell ourselves;

there lives a bitter bite.

Climbing out of deep waters, into the sunlight,

chasing a better life,

the shadow

     becomes the rainbow,

for a moment in time.

For a few weeks

the dragonfly owns the sky

and wonders why

the Willow weeps,

          but never gets the answers

he so desperately seeks

     before the temperature drops

and he joins the falling of the leaves.

It’s the things we love the most that destroy us,”

the birds sing, warning the young lovers and the trees.

The oldest Willow, tired of just watching, slowly speaks,

Then

be

destroyed

and let something new

bloom.”

And the old Willow wept, knowing none of us could hear his song.
