They Simply Age

A young man tells his story

   About his failed engagement

About how her parents hated him

He says they took her phone

And told her to leave him alone

He says that her parents wouldn’t let her go to work

That there was no way they would work out

They barely let her out of the house

He says her dad is a pastor

And he got kicked out of the church

    They called him undateable

And she eventually gave the ring back

   But didn’t block his number

So he would text her and call her

    Apparently unbothered

They never got back together

He sounded like a crazy kid

He sounded undateable

   He sounded very hateable

He sounded like he was capable of terrible things

    But at the end

He said he is fine

   Because Jesus sings

In his heart

    And

I am terrified of the kid

     Christ isn’t always the answer

For some people

    Christ is the poison

It’s so strange to me

To see and hear people do terrible things

But never face them

    Never confess them

Because they are so sure they’re on the righteous side of things

Because Christ has already forgiven them for all of their sins

So they never look within

   They never change

They simply age.

Driving to her was the easiest choice of my life. And,     Driving away from her is the hardest thing I’ll ever have to do . . . She wants to own a bookstore some day.   I think I’ll build one for her
