The Man From Mount Hope

Give me a minute or two

and I’ll tell you

about the man from Mount Hope

You see, he started as God’s biggest joke

Sad, scared and all too aware

His breaking dreams were stacking up

Weak, anxious and broken

The man from Mount Hope stopped hoping

Laughed at

Underestimated

Hated

The man limped through life,

Head down,

hood up,

headphones in,

Society didn’t make sense to him

So he ignored them,

Listening to nothing but his soul

He dug a hole

Down

Down

Down

he went

Always digging

His friends called him a ‘mole man’

Then, the rain

Floods came

Drowning

Spiraling

Spinning

He went down his hole

Down

Down

Down

Out the other end of earth

A monkey-man greeted him

Telling him he was cursed

And his curse was a purpose to his life

The man tried to explain his pain

He tried to explain how corrupt everything was

He pleaded and begged

Refusing to begin again

Saying it was pointless

Stating confidently that purpose was hopeless

The monkey-man nodded, agreeing with him

And pointed his staff to the heavens

A mountain’s peak broke through the clouds

And reached heaven

It was Mount Hope

The monkey man told him to climb

The man unknowingly sighed

and begin the climb

Step after step

Breath after breath

Second after second

He climbed until he arrived at the top

Where he saw himself, sitting down, looking around

He asked himself what he was doing there

looking up, he said he had been stuck on top of Mount Hope for years

because was paralyzed by his fears.

Crying,

he pointed down to earth.

It was burning.

People were screaming.

Kids were starving.

“I wanted to escape my real world and the world needed my help to make it a better place,”

he said. “I let them down.”

“What will we do?”

“We head back down.”

“Back through the hole we dug?”

“Back through the hole.”

“And after that?”

“We hope.”

“We hope?”

“We spread hope.”

“Why?”

“Because our world needs it.”

“Will it change anything?”

“Don’t know. It might.”

“Right.”

And the two, who were actually one, climbed back down Mount Hope.
