Without Any Lies

“He's a little man,” he said.
“How can a man like him take care of her?
“He's a degenerate.
“He's a weasel.
“He's weak.
“He’s lazy.”
“He’s a dreamer.
“He’s a lover.
“He’s a ‘free spirit’.
“He’s an insecure semi-intellectual.
“He’s narcissistic.
“He has sad eyes. What the hell does he have to be so sad about?
“He’s small.
“He’s no one.
“How can a man like him take care of her?”
“Well, let’s just let him love her and see what happens,” she said.
“You want us to wait and see? That’s what we did last time . . .”
“This isn’t like last time.”
“So you and her say. But, we’ll see. We’ll see. We’ll see what kind of man he is.”
I wonder what it will take
To look her mother and father in the eyes,
And tell them that I will always take care of their daughter,
Without any doubt;
Without any lies . . .
I wonder what I’ll have to do
To get people like that
To believe in me.
