What To Pray For
I want to hang up on my mom as she rattles on about nothing on the phone. I don't have any good news to the questions she's asking. But before she says goodbye, she asks if there's anything she can pray for.
For the first time in 20 years, I answer the question.
“The kids and their families,” I say. “And for Megan.”
“Okay. Of course. But is there anything for you I can pray about?”
I hesitate. “You can pray for Stanley . . . And you can pray for Kaitlyn.”
“Is she okay?”
“I don't know.”
“Oh . . . Well I've been praying for her for a while now. Is there anything you need?”
“Don't think so.”
“Will you let me know if you need anything?”
“I will.”
“Will you really?”
“Yeah.”
“You don't sound very good.”
“I'll be alright.”
“Okay . . . You know you are loved, don't you?”
“Yeah. I know it.”
“Okay.”
