Running

He was running from the monsters in his head
But his shoes were falling apart
And his arms were flailing about as if he was swimming, not running
Every stride was a gamble
Soon, he knew, he’d stumble
And the monsters would catch him
They’d eat his brain
Until he went insane
And the pain
The pain!
. . .
He had to run away
As fast as he could
As far as he could
He had to get away
Cerberus was closing the distance
The song sung by the Sirens grew louder
The Hydra lunged
He barely dodged one head
But the other head knocked him down
He picked himself up
And kept running
Ultron laughed
Lilith lay naked on a constantly reappearing bed to his right
Garry, The Cyclops, jumped down, his club in one hand, the head of Medusa in the other
He closed his eyes
And he ran
As fast as he could
As far as he could
Away from the monsters in his head
Help!
He felt a strange weight in his pocket
With his eyes still closed, he reached in his pocket
Pulling out
A
Pen!
. . .
He turned and threw it at the Cyclops
It bounced off of his head
And fell to the floor
The monsters in his head laughed at him
He ran
As fast as he could
As far as he could
His shoes were falling off of his feet
Only the laces were left
He ran
Fear driving him
Fear pushing him
The monsters
The shadows
The truth
The light
He was terrified to face them all
He couldn't stop
He wouldn’t stop
Trembling
And without a plan
He ran
From the monsters
From the shadows
From the truth
And from the light
Inside of his head
As he lay in his bed
He runs from everything he is afraid of in his head.
